That no man is an island may well be true, but it is just as true that Italy boasts myriad men and women that make exceptional wines from its many islands. And it could not be otherwise, given that the country boasts over 800 different islands and nine archipelagos, where native grapes grow and that are not found anywhere else in the world. What follows is a bevy of unique wines from Veneto to Sardinia, from Tuscany to Sicily, thanks to grapes such as Aleatico, Biancolella, Bovale Sardo, Carricante, Dorona, Fiano, Malvasia di Lipari, the Nerelli of Siciy, Nero d’Avola, Vernaccia di Oristano and Zibibbo (also known as Muscat of Alexandria) and many more, a wealth of viticultural biodiversity like that of no other country that Italy needs to defend, preserve, and communicate through the exciting wines made with each.
Ian D’Agata, internationally known expert of Italian native grapes and author of four different award-winning books on the subject has organized a masterclass exclusively for Vinitaly that will broach Italy’s island grapes and territories in the company of the producers who make what are not just great island wines, but some of Italy’s most interesting and best wines of all.
