QUALITY WINES FROM THE HEART OF EUROPE CUSTOZA DOC: THE ITALIAN ART OF BLENDING

Descrizione

Italian Wine Expert Henry Davar will guide us to better awareness of Custoza wines as an expression of the area located between the city of Verona and Garda lake, rich in history and tradition.

The Custoza DOC wine classification (Controlled Designation of Origin) was established in 1971 and takes its name from the historic village of Custoza, in northern Italy. Verona and Lake Garda are less than 10 miles away. The Custoza DOC production area combines natural beauty with history, culture and tradition. The area is characterised by a morainic amphitheatre. The soil includes rocky material, rich in minerals, carried down from the mountains through erosion by glaciers. The composition is predominantly chalky.

The climate features hot summers, cooled by breezes from Lake Garda, thereby creating a unique microclimate. Custoza DOC, as required by the Production Guidelines, is mainly made using Garganega, Trebbianello (local biotype of Tocai Friulano), Bianca Fernanda (local clone of Cortese) and Trebbiano Toscano grapes. These grapes are used alone or blended, with a minimum of 70%, and each single variety cannot exceed a maximum of 45%. It is then possible to add grapes from the other white varieties up to a maximum of 30% (alone or blended).

When young, Custoza can be fresh and incisive and, with ageing, can also become rather complex and elegant. In both cases, one of the distinctive features of this wine is the blend of several grape varieties, at the same time as promoting a terroir that naturally confers fruity notes, freshness and impressive flavour for a versatile, extremely agreeable wine that can be paired easily with many dishes.

This webinar will provide an up-to-date interpretation of the quality level achieved by this appellation 50 years since its foundation. The aim is to explore the various expressions and potential of the local area and its produce.
