The concept of terroir, well developed in Western Europe, has in the recent past been neglected or forgotten in Slovenia due to historical and socio-political reasons, similarly to many other countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Things are now changing, and increasing numbers of Slovenian producers are getting better at understanding the outstanding potential of their vineyard sites. Slovenia is a minute cross-section of Europe in terms of geography, climate and culture, and from a wine perspective this is a statement of great opportunity. Across the Slovenian wine regions, the number of single-vineyard wines appearing on domestic and international markets is on the rise. This workshop aims to show why Slovenia is becoming one of Europe's most promising wine destinations, through an overview of some of the best examples of single-vineyard wines made from local and international varieties, all expressing the uniqueness of their place of origin.

Guillaume received his PhD in Oenology at the Institute of Vine and Wine Sciences of the Bordeaux University. He graduated in 2010, joining the Institute for Wine Biotechnology at the University of Stellenbosch (South Africa) where he met his wife, originally from Slovenia and working in the field of viticulture. They spent two years in South Africa and three years in Australia (Charles Sturt University) doing research in close collaboration with the wine industry on topics like terroirs, typicality, and grape maturity. Finally, they returned to Europe in 2016, choosing Slovenia as their settling destination with a firm belief that the country has much to offer from a wine perspective. Guillaume is currently an Assistant Professor of Oenology at the University of Nova Gorica, an oenologist at the Suklje wine estate, co-founder of the Wine Bar Suklje in Ljubljana, a regular contributor to Slovenian wine media and occasionally a judge at national and international wine competitions. His main ambition is to help put Slovenia on the world map of finest wines.
